This clock is one of the coolest stupid dHTML tricks I’ve seen yet.

A Frightening Ordeal: “It’s the sort of thing that went on in the Soviet Union, except the Soviets did it with a bit more due process” - remember kids, criminal trials require due process but psychiactric imprisonment just requires someone to say they know you and you’re nuts.

It’s the User, Stupid: “The Open Source movement has no feedback loop to end-users, and no imperative to create one.”

women.com’s The Men of Silicon Valley helps level the objectification playing field with Playboy Playmate style bio sheets (college, car, title vs. chest, waist, hips) on SV bachelors. Oh, the humanity.

Letter From The Art Director: “Despite all the improvements in technology over the past 5 years, web users have consistently demanded simplicity and efficiency over all else. The majority of individuals online are looking for information, not a pretty look.”

Early morning partner meeting after 4 hours of sleep after marathon meetings and appointments until late last night, and I still underestimate the ability of The Promised Land to wake me up.

RIP, Hedy Lamarr, 1913 - 2000. Increasingly well known fact: she invented spread-spectrum.

Apple’s board gives Steve a bonus of stock options and a jet plane to complement his $1 salary. Did they buy the jet from Amelio? The salary stays at $1. Good.

Review: Supernova. Skip it. It’s not just bad, it’s boring.

One note for Frontier fans. This entire site is managed in Frontier in one way or another. The majority of the site is managed using the BBEdit integration (From Frontier 4, originally) in Frontier 5.0.1 on a Mac. The quotes section is managed using the BBEdit with some particularly heinous macros. The Log is managed using editthispage.com (aka a customization of Manila (aka Frontier 6)) at Userland’s site. Underneath, it’s all a bit of a hack. On top, it’s relatively seamless. As Dave would say: Cooooool!

Be has a cunning plan to get BeOS onto your Windows desktop. Unlike people who’ve tried similar tactics in the past, BeOS has two advantages: it’s free and it has a UI. Will it work? Not for me: it doesn’t run with Windows 2000 or NTFS.

I finally got SHOUTcast working. What a pain. Still, it is pretty neat to be able to broadcast excerpts from my CD collection from a machine on my desk to… another machine on my desk.

I’m going totally Valley. I had my first “meeting” at Buck’s today. Somebody kill me. (the food, like the off-beat decor, was fantastic)

Please note: It is spelled Elise and there’s another one at a dealer off Whipple & 101.

Blatant Plug: For people who are irritated with amazon.com, I’d recommend Powell’s Books.

They have a very usable site (unlike all of Amazon’s competitors, which I tried and gave up on), and are an actual Brick and Mortar store for those of you concerned about e-commerce wiping out conventional stores. Plus, they carry used and out-of-print books and offer free shipping if your order is over $50. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, I’ve just been really happy with their service and their tendency to not be bastards.
